How has Open Source ERP benefited the S.M.E.'s Sector?

Enterprise Resource planning has of late become the watch word of Information technology. Not all companies were able to go for ERP because of the inadequacy of
resources in terms of manpower money and time. This deterred small and medium enterprises to make use of the enterprise applications. However the trend underwent a sea change with the intrusion of open source ERP technologies.

Some of the lucrative features of Open Source ERP in S.M.E.'s are as follows:

Abridged use of the big versions
Vendors explored the S.M.E.'s market during a point of time when they felt that the market was saturated for bigger players. They catered to the S.M.E.'s out of need and not out of desire. Moreover this impact was felt on a sudden. This left them without any ideal time for developing exclusive packages for vendors. On the other hand the demands were excessive from the Open Source ERP in S.M.E.'S.

The vendors did not have any other option except in letting the companies to make abridged use of the versions. This was profitable to the vendor and beneficial to the company because they can have access to certain supportive functions which they would have otherwise only dreamt of.

The abridged use of the bigger versions was certainly helpful to handle day to day operations in an efficient manner. Moreover they provided to be a valuable standby until separate software programs were brought into force. This ensured that the vendors did not lose potential business and market. This practice still remains in vogue even after developing exclusive applications for Open Source ERP in S.M.E.'S.
Designed to easily adapt changes
ERP was never welcomed in large companies due to the changes that one has to implement. This remained true even if companies were aware that such a change will bring them greater profits. This was more applicable in the case of conventional organizations that followed age old practices. There are practical difficulties faced by the company with regards to implementing ERP. Infact one could justify the grin in their faces because ERP meant a sea change in the business process.

However this is not the case with small and medium enterprises. These enterprises can undergo change immediately and effectively though not without difficulties. Open source ERP software programs were designed to adapt and forecast those changes. This flexibility was a boon to small and medium enterprises that were by and large changing with the fluctuations in the market. As a matter of fact the resources and restructuring in those enterprises are minimal in the change process. Hence open Source ERP is more apt for S.M.E.'S.
Advanced features dealing with individual components
Open source ERP in S.M.E. not only supports the core function it works for but also the constituents of that particular function. Therefore when there is a slag in the constituent of the function open source can help to overcome them. This does away with the trouble of relying on that vendor alone. This is more sensible because the organization need not shut down the enterprise application until a minute or error in one of its constituent's is solved. This is the specialty of S.M.E. with open source ERP.

Conclusion

Open Source ERP software programs are e found to be highly successful. The failure stories and error rates are very less unlike the erp applications implemented for big companies. Even if they occur the rate is minimal.
