Warehouse management system

Warehouse management system refers to an integrated set of system functions intended for managing the location, put away, movement, picking and cycle count or inventory verification activities of a warehouse or distribution centre. It usually receives purchases, sales, interplant order data from ERP system that serve as the authorization to begin activities.

Since the materials should be moved and stocked in a proper direction, warehouse locations are described in terms of their weight and volume capacities. The inventory and order status data are collected in real time by the use of various data collection devices and is normally uploaded on a batch basis to the base ERP system.

Warehouse management system also evolved like that of other software solutions. It was used as a system to control movement and storage of materials within a warehouse in the beginning. Of late, the functionality of warehouse management system is expanding to light manufacturing, transportation management, order management and total account system.
